NASCAR Modified Champion Ted Christopher
Wins Atlantic City Gambler’s Classic
ATLANTIC
CITY, NJ – Ted Christopher opened the 2009 racing season in a big way
by winning the Gambler’s Classic TQ Midget/600 cc Micro Sprint Car race
at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Saturday night.
The defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion earned $5,000 for claiming his first-career indoor race at the New Jersey shore.
“I’ve
won a lot of things over the years, but this one surely ranks up there
as one of the best,” Christopher said. “This race has so much history
and it’s a hard event to win.”
Christopher, 50, of Plainville, Conn., started 14th in the 25-car starting field and topped two-time Gambler’s Classic winner Joey Payne at the finish.
“Joey is a master of the race and any indoor event,” Christopher said. “I knew he would be right there, trying to get the win.”
Christopher, though, had a dominant car as he topped Payne by four-car lengths at the end of the 40-lap race.
Payne
of Fairlawn, N.J., settled for a well-earned second after flipping his
race car early in the event, but the team made repairs quick enough for
him to return to the feature. Mike Lichty of Innerkip, Ontario, was third, while Jeff Heotzler of Wallkill, N.Y., was fourth and Ryan Smith of Kunkletown, Pa., was fifth.
Pole-sitter
Matt Janisch had the advantage from the pole-starting spot as several
of the mid-pack racers, including one-time winner and pre-race favorite
Lou Cicconi Jr. were involved in crashes.
However, Janisch’s efforts were turned on a lap 21 when he was spun from contention on a restart.
Christopher restarted the race alongside Heotzler and powered into the lead on the restart.
He proceeded to lead the final half of the race while Payne wrestled with Heotzler to get the second position.
Earlier in the evening, Frank Fischer, Christopher, Pat Bealer and Payne won the feature transfer races.
Paul Lotier Jr. of Lebanon, Pa., started 15th and won the Briggs and Stratton Slingshot feature, earning $1,500 in the process.
Lotier topped Marc Daniels, Todd Dippel, Michael Butler and Kyle Heiber in the final tally.
Ryan Kendall of East Greenbush, N.Y., won the Champ Kart feature race. Norman Hynes was second, followed by Todd Root, Eric Zeh and Coby Cressinger.

BILLY PAUCH SCORES IMPRESSIVE ATLANTIC CITY INDOOR WIN
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Billy Pauch has scored well over 600 feature wins in his career.
And Friday night at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, Pauch of Frenchtown, N.J., added one to his stellar list as he claimed the TQ Midget/600 cc Micro Sprint feature, which served as a preliminary for Saturday night’s Gambler’s Classic.
It was Pauch’s second career win indoors at Atlantic City. He has a previous win in a 20-lap feature.
This time, though, Pauch beat one of the best on the indoor circuit as Lou Cicconi Jr., who became the first driver to break the eight-second bracket in Thursday’s qualifying, finished in the second spot.
“Lou is always tough at these indoor races,” Pauch said. “Boy, we sure did make a race out of it.”
Actually, Pauch was the talk of the night.
At the start of the first heat race, Pauch was involved in a first turn skirmish, which ended with his car upside down. The car was rolled on its wheels and Pauch proceeded to complete the main event, earning a feature-qualifying spot in the process.
Pauch started in the third position behind front-row starters Rudy Boetticher and Jeff Heotzler.
He ran in second until a lap three restart, which found Heotzler regaining the runner-up spot. It was short-lived, as Pauch got a great start on the lap five restart.
Boetticher got loose on the ninth round, which allowed Pauch to grab the top spot.
Despite having the lead, it was far from over as Cicconi, who started sixth in the 20-car field, moved into the runner-up spot on lap 12 and pressured Pauch immediately.
A caution on lap 13 tightened the field and despite frequent attempts to get the lead, Cicconi was unsuccessful.
Mike Lichty, in fact, got by Cicconi for the second position on lap 18, but those spots were reversed on lap 23.
Cicconi made every threat to get the lead over the final two laps, but Pauch didn’t waver in his victory.
Pauch can win the Behrent’s Bonus if he elects to start 12th in Saturday night’s feature field and claims in the 40-lap Gambler’s Classic.
The top 12 finishers will draw for their starting positions during Saturday’s Ms. Motorsports 2009 pageant, which is taking place at the AC Convention Center.
Cicconi, Heath Hehnly, Jon Holmquist, James Michael Friesen and Mike Tidaback won heat races.
Nick Herriven, Andrew Berkholder, Norm Hynes and Tyler Robertson won heat races for the Champ Karts.
Gary Hieber, Ricky Yetter and Billy Weaver won heat races for the Briggs and Stratton Slingshots.
Action kicks up Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with Fanfest. The TQ/600 cc Micro Sprint Eliminator is scheduled at 7:30, followed by four transfer races, Slingshot feature, Champ Kart feature and the 40-lap Gambler’s Classic.

LIQUID LOU CALLS OUT STEWART AFTER ATLANTIC CITY FAST TIME
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Lou Cicconi Jr. is known for his expertise of mastering indoor racing circles.
So it wasn’t much of a surprise when the Aston, Pa., driver posted a record-lap of 8.982 seconds in Thursday night’s TQ Midget/600 cc Micro Sprint time trials at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall, topping a field of more than 95 cars that registered time.
Cicconi did have one question after the first eight-second lap turned on20the indoor oval.
“Where’s Tony?,” asked Cicconi.
Cicconi was asking the whereabouts of NASCAR Sprint Car Series racer Tony Stewart, a good friend and indoor racing competitor.
Just three weeks ago, Cicconi was leading a preliminary feature race at the Rumble Series event in Ft. Wayne, Ind., when Cicconi was bumped from the lead and Stewart went on to win. Cicconi rebounded the following night and won the Midget Car main event.
Not only did Cicconi grab the fast time, but his team car, which is driven by Bobby Santos III, posted the second-fastest lap with a time of 9.299. Mike Lichty was third in 9.342, Stewart Friesen was third in 9.362, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Ted Christopher was fifth in 9.420 and dirt Modified expert Billy Pauch was sixth in 9.460.
“It’s awesome to come out like that and set fast time, plus get the top two spots,” Cicconi said. “Bobby’s a good race car driver, and he didn’t need any advice from me. I’m real proud of him.”
In Briggs and Stratton Slingshot qualifying, Michael Butler of Milford, N.J., posted a fast lap of 10.722 seconds. He earned a $100 bonus named in honor the late Dick “Toby” Tobias.
Butler topped Shannon Smith (10.773), Anthony Perrego (10.836), Rick Laubach (10.874), Ryan Godown (10.985) and Willy Evernham (11.120).
Both Laubach and Godown are experienced dirt Modified drivers, while Evernham is the nephew of Ryan Evernham.
Coby Cresssinger of Selinsgrove, Pa., set fast time in the Champ Karts with a lap of 10.106 seconds. He received a $50 bonus.
Justin Bonsignore was second in 10.132, followed by defending race champion Chris Daley (10.221), David Pantanella (10.281), Ryan Kendall (10.304) and John H illman (10.328).
Racing action begins Friday at 7:30, which includes a TQ/600 cc Micro Sprint heats and an Eliminator race, Champ Kart heats, Slingshot heats and a 20-lap main event for the TQ/600 cc Micro Sprints.
The Gambler’s Classic culminates on Saturday evening with a TQ/600 Eliminator race, transfer events and main events for all classes.
