“We want to share the great memories of our speedway,” Kreitzer said. “We have always viewed Silver Spring Speedway as a great race track for friends and family to meet ever Saturday night, and we hope to have the same happen at Motorsports 2011.”

The track, which opened in the fall of 1953, transgressed the boundaries of dirt track racing, offering thousands of fans a weekly gathering point that featured many different classes albeit the more commonly known Super Sportsman being the most popular.

Ground was broken on Silver Spring Speedway in the fall of 1953, a 3/8 mile semi-banked clay oval after the Penn-Mar Racing Club approached Cumberland County businessman Ray Garver Sr. about building an auto track for the club.

By the following summer, the new speedway was ready for action. The club intended to offer a regular schedule of Wednesday night races. But, that strategy was changed after just one event, with the action moving to Saturdays. A few shows later, feeling it had a less than spectacular debut, the club abandoned Silver Spring Speedway.

After the 1954 season Ray Garver, a successful market operator, hired W.A. Kreitzer Jr. as speedway manager.

The jalopies that were raced in the early days gave way to the stock car in 1962 and evolved into the Sportsman cars. The Sportsman were allowed to have overhead cam engines starting in 1969, and in 1978 saw the introduction of torsion bar suspensions to the division, the cars of today feature an open cockpit like the sprinters, but have less power. They use carburetors, clutches, and starters unlike the sprinters.

The division during their running at track was the most competitive of any, with an average of 50 cars vying for the 26 spots in a regular 25-lap feature. The Sportsman became so popular that a touring division was formed in 1986, giving the teams the chance to race at other local tracks. Also, in 1962, a new class, the Hobby Division, was formed. A car could be claimed for $129. The Hobby cars were renamed Early Modifieds in 1973 and progressed into the Limited Late Models.  1982 saw the start of the Street Stock division.

The track also would hold other types of racing (Go-Karts, 410/358 Sprint Cars, Midge Carts, Micro Sprint Cars, 4-Cyl. Cars and others).

Many drivers raced at Silver Spring Speedway, with some families having brothers, cousins, uncles, nephews, dads, sons and even daughters racing over the years.

Exhibit space for the Motorsports 2011 Presented by SEF Small Engine Fuel Race Car and Trade show continues to fill at a record pace and everyone is reminded to be in touch with Tim Hogue to make their show space reservations before the show has all 250,000 square feet spoken for.

Also race teams are reminded that if they are planning to have their race cars on display and gain some excellent exposure for their sponsors in front of the thousands of show attendees they should be in touch with Hogue to make arrangements. Hogue can be reached at 609-888-3618 or tim@aarn.com.

TOP NORTHEAST FEATURE DRIVER WINNERS TO BE HONORED
AT MOTORSPORTS 2011

By JERRY REIGLE

TRENTON, NJ -
Keith Rocco and Stewart Friesen took it down to the wire.

Literally.

Both drivers did their best to claim supremacy in the Northeast overall feature win category, as maintained by Area Auto Racing News, as each entered two events in last month’s Turkey Derby XXXVII at Wall Stadium, but both fell short of winning.

Therefore, both will be honored at Motorsports 2011 presented by SEF Race Car and Trade Show on January 22 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.

Rocco and Friesen have confirmed their plans to attend the event along with Josh Richards (dirt Late Models), Gene Knaub (dirt Late Models), Tim Shaffer (open cockpit) and Sean McAndrew (Micro Sprint Cars). Asphalt Late Model category winner Wayne Helliwell Jr. will be unable to attend due to the ACT banquet being held on the same night.,

“It is quite an honor to win something this big,” said Friesen, who also won the dirt Modified category. “This has been a dream season for me and I am so fortunate to have great car owners. This title is just as much about them as it is about me.”

Rocco, who also won the asphalt Modified category, had similar thoughts about this respective honor.

“You get so caught up during the season with racing, preparing cars, etc. and you tend to forget about what it all means,” Rocco said. “Winning that many features is incredible and it’s quite a statistic, when you sit back and think about it.”

Rocco’s superb season in the asphalt Modified circuit included 24 victories, five more than Ted Christopher. The Meriden, Conn., driver added another win to his season with an asphalt Late Model win, which came on July 9 at Stafford Motor Speedway.

Rocco, who won the SK-Modified track titles at Stafford Motor Speedway and Waterford Speedway, earned pivotal SK-Modified wins at New Smyrna Speedway in February and Concord Motorsports Park in November.

In between those victories, Rocco grabbed checkered flags at and 10 wins each at Stafford Motor Speedway and Waterford Speedbowl, and another two at Thompson International Speedway.

Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lakes, Canada, captured his first career 360 Sprint Car main in ’10 with an ASCS Patriot Sprint victory at Ransomville Speedway.

However, it was his Outlaw-type Modified schedule that made him a fan favorite this past racing season. He won 24 dirt Modified mains, two more than Matt Sheppard. Friesen didn’t commit to any series, opting for an all-out assault to the season, which included track titles at the Utica-Rome Speedway and Five Mile Point Speedway.

Friesen opened ’10 with a Super DIRTcar Series win at Volusia Speedway Park. His other SDS wins came at Cayuga County Fair Speedway and the prestigious SEF 200 at the New York State Fairgrounds.

He dominated at Five Mile Point Speedway by claiming 10 feature events, with five coming at Utica-Rome Speedway, two at Ransomville Speedway, two at Fonda Speedway and one each at Penn Can Speedway and Grandview Speedway.

Shaffer of Aliquippa, Pa., is returning to the Motorsports show for the second consecutive year.

After a successful ’09 season, Shaffer had a career-making season with his 21-win season, two more than Pat Cannon.

Shaffer’s banner win season started with an ASCS 360 Sprint Car win at East Bay Raceway Park in February and it concluded in October with an All Star Circuit of Champions win at Lawrenceburg. Shaffer won his second consecutive ASCoC title.

Shaffer’s season was highlighted with the $150,000 Knoxville Nationals, which he captured in mid-August. His 21 wins came in 10 different states and Canada, He also won with the ASCoC, WoO, ASCS and two unsanctioned events.

Knaub of Dover, Pa., and Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., tied with 15 countable dirt Late Model victories.

Knaub dominated the 358 Late Model scene with track titles coming at Williams Grove Speedway, Lincoln Speedway and Trail-Way Speedway.

He captured main events at Williams Grove Speedway (seven), Trail-Way Speedway (three), Susquehanna Speedway Park (three) Central Pennsylvania Speedway (one) and Lincoln Speedway (one).

Richards became the first driver in the modern history of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series to win back-to-back titles.

Richards kicked off the season with a January victory at Golden Isles Speedway. His other wins came at Winchester Speedway (four), Hagerstown Speedway (two), Delaware International Speedway, the Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Eriez Speedway, Fayetteville Motor Speedway, Mohawk International Raceway, Ohsweken Speedway, Pennsylvania Motor Speedway and Volusia Speedway Park.

Helliwell of Dover, N.H., narrowly won the asphalt Late Model win category with his 10 win season. Austin Kochenash finished with nine victories, while Woody Pitkat was third with eight.

Nine of Helliwell’s 10 victories came at Lee USA Speedway with another coming at Canaan Fair Speedway.

In ’11, Helliwell will drive a small-block Supermodified at Lee USA Speedway. The small-block Supermodifieds are the headline division at the track.

In the Micro Sprint Car category, McAndrew of Apollo, Pa., had a banner season with 22 feature wins, four more than runner-up Phil Durham.

McAndrew piloted his No. 15 to 15 wins at Path Valley Speedway, three at Blanket Hill Speedway, two at Deerfield Speedway and one each at Clinton County Raceway and Sportsman’s Speedway.

TOP NORTHEAST FEATURE WINNERS TO BE HONORED
AT MOTORSPORTS 2011 RACE CAR AND TRADE SHOW

OAKS, PA - December 9, 2011 - Keith Rocco and Stewart Friesen took it down to the wire.

Asphalt Late Model category winner Wayne Helliwell Jr. will be unable to attend.

He is the NASCAR Whelen All American Series National champion.

ONCE POPULAR SILVER SPRING SPEEDWAY WILL BE REMEMBERED
AT MOTORSPORTS 2011 RACE CAR AND TRADE SHOW

OAKS, PA (December 2, 2010) -
It’s gone but far from forgotten.

The famed Silver Spring Speedway, which was located in Mechanicsburg, Pa., hosted great auto racing action for 53 years, before the facility and adjacent grounds were razed in 2006.

The track, which opened in the fall of 1953, transgressed the boundaries of dirt track racing, offering thousands of fans a weekly gathering point that featured many different classes albeit the more commonly known Super Sportsman being the most popular.

When Motorsports 2011 presented by SEF Race Car and Trade Show takes place at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pa., on January 21-23, Silver Spring Speedway will again be in the spotlight as the history of the speedway will be a key attraction of the weekend.

“It is a true honor to have Silver Spring Speedway remembered during the Motorsports 2011 weekend,” said Alan Kreitzer, former promoter of Silver Spring Speedway. “We are excited to have a professional presentation of cars and drivers who made Silver Spring Speedway popular among the racing fraternity.”

During the Motorsports 2011 weekend of the race cars that were seen in action at Silver Spring Speedway will be on view. Plans are in the works to have a number of drivers and team members who participated there at the show to meet and sign autographs for the fans.

Fans and racers are encouraged to bring Silver Spring Speedway-related memorabilia such as scrapbooks, photos and programs.

“Silver Spring Speedway was an important part of the dirt track industry and I, along with everyone who attends Motorsports 2011, am looking forward to seeing the cars and drivers who made the track popular,” said Motorsports 2011 producer Len Sammons. “The track operated successfully under the Kreitzer family and that that family-value system is one of the key ingredients for its success and continued legacy.”

Ground was broken on Silver Spring Speedway in the fall of 1953, on the 3/8 mile semi-banked clay oval after the Penn-Mar Racing Club approached Cumberland County businessman Ray Garver Sr. about building an auto track for the club.

An important part of the show will be large number of area speedways that will be part of the Motorsports 2011 show which means many of the local racing stars will be making appearances. Close to 250 motor sports vehicles of all types will be on display during the weekend.

Exhibit space for the show continues to fill at a record pace and everyone is reminded to be in touch with Tim Hogue to make their show space reservations before the show has all 250,000 square feet spoken for.

Also race teams are reminded that if they are planning to have their race cars on display and gain some excellent exposure for their sponsors in front of the thousands of show attendees they should be in touch with Hogue to make arrangements. Hogue can be reached at 609-888-3618 or tim@aarn.com.
